The scientific name of black soldier fly is Hermetia illucens. It is fast-breeding. If they do not exist, waste materials will cover the earth.

At one glance, an adult may look like a wasp but the waist is not as remarkly thin as a wasp. The lower section of its legs is white. Adults do not have fully functional mouthpart so they only drink water. Adult lifespan is only about one week so all they do is breeding. They do not lay their eggs directly on decomposting materials but nearby. They do not have the habit of entering human houses.

The larvae can decompose a wide range of organic materials. The larvae are excellent for feeding pets because it has no known parasites. They are also edible by humans.
