Leaves of Cat's Whiskers Are Edible
cat's whiskers
The cat's whiskers plant gets its name from the resemblance of its flowers with cat's whiskers. It is also called the kidney tea plant because it is good for kidney and bladder when consumed. Its botanical name is Orthosiphon. It is a must-have for every household.

The plant has ornamental value. It can grow up to three feet. Its flowers look like cat whiskers. Its leaves have serrated margin. Its purplish stem is four-sided (square cut section).

It is a tropical perenniel herb. Due to its small size, it can thrive in pots. It can be easily propagated by cuttings. It can be grown on balcony without direct sunlight. When under full sun, it needs to be watered at least once daily with plenty of water.

It is diuretic. It is consumed as tea. The tea can be brewed from fresh or dried leaves. The tea tastes a bit sweet. Raw leaves although edible do not taste as good because it has "grassy" flavour and is quite fibrous. Harvest by cutting the stems as it is very time-consuming to just pick the leaves. The flowers can also be harvested together. After harvesting, the plant will grow vigorously again.
