Lot Was Carnal
brimstone and fire
Lot was Abraham's nephew. Lot in Hebrew means covering. God regarded him to be righteous because he was worried about the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah (2 Peter 2:7). His father died early, so he followed his grandfather. After his grandfather died, God talked to his uncle for the first time about the promised land. Lot then followed his uncle.

Although he gained wealth through his uncle but he did not live in peace with his uncle. One day, a major conflict finally happened between his uncle's men and his men. His uncle let him choose the part of land that he wanted. He chose the greener piece of plain and separated from his kind uncle to live with wicked people in Sodom and Gomorrah.

Later Lot and his family was captured by an alliance of four kings who attacked Sodom and Gomorrah. Upon knowing about it, his uncle immediately gathered 318 men for a bold rescue mission regardless of being greatly outnumbered. With the blessing from God, his uncle was able to defeat the alliance. However, Lot did not learn from the warning and still went back to Sodom.

Due to the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah, God told his uncle that the area will be destroyed. With the love towards Lot, his uncle engaged in a long winding negotiation with God to prevent the destruction. But God would continue the plan because there were not even ten righteous people in the area.

Two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening as two fine men. Lot was sitting at the gate and saw them. Probably thinking that they were noble men, Lot tried to befriend them. He insisted to invite them to stay in his house and they finally agreed.

At night, the men of Sodom surrounded his house with the intention to rape his visitors. He came out and shut the door behind him. He admonished the men not to do the wicked act, but then he proposed to give his two virgin daughters to those men. Those men had no respect for Lot's suggestion. They pressed forward and were about to break the door. The angels pulled Lot into the house and struck the men outside with blindness.

The angels finally stated their intention to destroy the city and requested Lot to escape with his family. Lot told his future sons-in-law about it but they mocked him. Early in the morning, the angels urged Lot to leave immediately but Lot still hesitated. The two angels grabbed hold of the hand of Lot, his wife and his daughters and pulled them out of the city. Once they were out of the city, the angels asked them to escape to the mountain and not to look back. But Lot requested to go to the city of Zoar. The angels agreed and spared the city of Zoar from destruction for the sake of Lot. Lot entered Zoar during sunrise. Brimstone and fire rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot's wife looked back and she turned into a pillar of salt. Abraham woke up early and noticed the smoke. The once fertile land in the eyes of Lot is barren until today.

Lot became afraid to stay in Zoar, probably because it was just adjacent to the two cities. So he changed his mind to move to the mountain. He and his daughters stayed in a cave. His daughters created a false crisis that there were no men on earth to marry them. Sometimes what sinful people think is really incomprehensible. So they conspired to get him drunk and sleep with him. Perhaps Lot was alcoholic, bringing a lot of wine with him even in that critical period, despite losing all his other belongings. The elder daughter laid with him on the first night and the younger the second. After the first night, Lot should have been alert but he repeated the same incestuous mistake at the second night. It seemed he was receptive of the sin. As a result of this sin, two sinful nations, Moabites and Ammonites, were born and would be in continuous conflicts with Israelites. What happened to Lot later was unknown.
