Salvation Checklist
Gospel is called good news or glad tidings, literally "blessed sound" in Chinese.
Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

The Bible centres on salvation from sin.
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

A proper object of faith is necessary.
1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
2 Corinthians 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
1 Thessalonians 3:5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

Sin means missing the target to become perfect or holy. Sin is undiscipline or unholiness, coming short of the glory of God. For example, stealing, adultery, withdrawnness and laziness are sins. Due to sinful nature, we tend to do things that bring harm to others and risk to ourselves. We irrationally proceed to do it knowing it is bad. Sin brings regret later. We do not have to wonder when the misery will end, but can change the mindset from this very second to strive for perfection in everything.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Salvation is mainly about being saved or healed from the bondage of sin. Hell is like a jail so if we behave ourselves, we will not end up in jail. Most people who talk about salvation from hell are missing the root cause: the sin. Even worse, some people live as if they are going to hell because they think they are already saved from hell. The only reason to believe in Jesus is our sin, not because of hell, heaven or peace, which is out of selfish desire.

Although nobody deserves salvation, salvation is still given. Do not frighten ourselves into rejecting the gospel by thinking salvation is obtained by not committing any sin after this. That is a wrong thought because Christians do fall. God loves us not because we are good, but because He wants to make us good. If we truly repent, then the Holy Spirit dwells in us and shall not leave. We will be born again. Being born cannot be undone. Holy Spirit enhances the our conscience, convicting us. When we are saved from sin, the number of sins we commit will reduce. We will not sin easily or habitually. Before salvation, we are the slaves of sin. Previously we surrender to sin but after being born again we fight. When we sin as Christians, we will feel really bad and rise up again without staying fallen.
John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

This salvation checklist can be used:
  1. to preach the gospel.
  2. to check if a person believes all the points in the gospel, especially before baptism. This can be done by letting the person read the checklist as a formal declaration in front of the congregation.
  3. as a statement of faith.
  4. to protect against heretical doctrines. Cults do not want people to know the conditions for salvation. Cults even create their own bible to conceal these. If these are not causes for salvation, cults will not bother about them. If a group claims that it does not accept one point in basic Christian doctrines, even though it accepts all other points, it is still a cult.
  5. to avoid stepping into cultic churches.

Salvation checklist

A person can become a Christian by himself or herself by mere change of mind as per the following, anytime, anywhere. No change of name or traditional attire is needed.
  1. I confess I have sinned. (verses)
  2. I know about Jesus:
    1. Jesus, fully God, was born of a virgin conceived by God the Holy Spirit to also become fully yet uncreated man and the only begotten Son of God the Heavenly Father. (verses)
    2. Jesus was sinless but nailed to the cross and paid for believers the righteous price of sin: death. (verses)
    3. Jesus rose in physical body from the dead, on third day after burial. (verses)
    4. Jesus is coexisting with Heavenly Father and Holy Spirit as one and only God of creation the Trinity, but is not Heavenly Father or Holy Spirit. (verses)
  3. I am willing to be saved:
    1. I desire to stop sinning. (verses)
    2. I rely only on Jesus to save me from the bondage of sin and as the Lord of my life. (verses)

About repentance

Repentance is change of mindset or perception, in which no physical action is involved. Although it is mere change of mindset, the potential from the change is huge. Mindset determines the action. Thus even in the corporate world, companies are willing to spend to change the mindset of employees. Repentance begins with confession of sin.

Merely knowing Jesus and believing the existence of God do not bring salvation. If a person says he believes in Jesus but he is unwilling to try stop sinning, that shows he does not really have faith. For example a fire victim at 10 meters above the ground cannot say that he believes firemen below will catch him but he does not want to jump. That is like paying lip service. Logically, Holy Spirit wants to see certain cleanliness in a person's heart before He dwells in the person. God allows sufficient time for everyone to repent. God will prepare the ground for a person to repent, just like Jesus prepared the water for Peter to walk on. It is just a matter whether the person wants to rely on Christ to do it or not. Nobody can rely on own strength to do it.
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Revelation 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

Note that we cannot rely on our own strength to repent. Understand that even if we repent, that does not mean we are righteous enough. If we think we are righteous enough to deserve salvation, then we are unsaved. Remember we cannot rely on ourselves to be saved.

If we truly repent, we will not care whether there will be heaven or not. Instead we will desire holiness and hate sin even if there is no punishment. On the contrary, if we hate sin only when the punishment is near, we are actually impenitent. If we believe in Jesus because we want to get anything, including peace, physical healing or heaven, other than salvation from sin, then we are unsaved. The belief is from selfish desire or motive.
2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Relying on Jesus as The Lord of personal life

It means we have to do everything in His name, or else it will be of no value. Since whatever we do is in His name so we have to make sure we do not do inappropriate things. It is also a realization that whatever thing we have is actually His so we have to be ready to let go the things when necessary. But that does not mean giving up all possessions to some charlatans lurking in the church who exploit this point. Just do not use our possession in a sinful way but use it for a good cause.

What to do after believing

  1. Deal with the sin. If we have taken things that are not entitled for us (e.g. stealing), return the taken items. if we are addicted to drug, throw away the drugs and cut the supply. If we gamble, stop it. If we buy pirated software, throw away the software. If we are sales persons who tell lie to earn more money, stop it. Genuine faith will bring good work. If we do not want to deal with the sin, that only means our faith is not pure. No excuse. It is not that we cannot deal with the sin. It is correct to say that perhaps a saved person will sin again. He or she will not be sinless, but will sin less. Heavenly Father will discipline that person with consequences etc and he will rise from the sin again without falling continuously. However it is wrong to say that the person does not have to deal with current sins. After dealing with the sin, the person will feel clean. If the person does not deal with the sin, no matter how many times he confesses his sin to God, he still has guilt.
    James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
  2. Resist sins to glorify God and feel the joy. We are not alone in doing this because Holy Spirit is in us strengthening us. We are to pray to God when we are about to sin. Avoid going to places where temptation may be. Do not take sinning for granted because there are consequences. We will not be joyful for a long time and we will still have to face punishment in this life by society law and by God. How will we feel if we are sinning when the rapture takes place? Salvation is not a license to sin. If we use salvation as an excuse or a license to sin, we are not saved. Do we look like Christians in front of our family and friends? We are to repent if we have sinned. This is like quality mindset in which mistake has to be corrected. This is a process of sanctification.
    John 15:10-11 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
    Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
    1 Thessalonians 4:5-7 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of allsuch, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
    Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
    Hebrews 12:4-6 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
    1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
    Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
  3. Find a church that accepts all the points in salvation checklist above and is near to our house to attend every Sunday. Listening to sermon every week will have us reminded regularly of not sinning. It is good to know a few nearby churches that have different service times so that in case we cannot attend one service, we can still go to another.
    Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
  4. Pray always. Prayer can be done anytime anywhere in heart. If you do not know how to pray, at least pray before a meal. Example: Heavenly Father, thank you for the meal. In Lord Jesus' name. Amen.
    Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
    1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
  5. Read the Bible when desired to, daily if possible.
  6. Preach the gospel as necessary, but not in a hard-selling way. Mistakes can be made out of good intention. Do not persuade or urge others. Gospel is supposed to be shared by reflection of our life. Having love towards other and living in light gain the "right" to preach. For example loud talking-to-yourself street preaching, without spectators, is not recommended. We will feel that is noisy and abusive too if other people do so to promote something. Do not expect strangers to believe in Christ because they do not know us so they cannot see whether our fruits are good. Start with the family. It is ironic to share the gospel to others but ignore our own family. Our family sees us clearly. If we live a life that can convince our family, then we will be able to convince others. However do not compromise on something wrong to gain favour, as some people perceive something right as wrong, such as honouring parents. Also when some people approach us with words of offensive words of disbelief, just ignore them.
    Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
    1 Corinthians 7:15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
  7. Get baptized after dealing with our sins that we can recall, and completing Sunday school. However, if our family does not allow us to do so, do not do it yet. If desired, observe and choose a preacher who lives a godly life to baptize us. If desired, the church can set a rule to only baptize the person if the person stays in the church for a period of time, showing strong faith.
  8. Help others, especially those who need spontaneous help from good Samaritan, such as a traffic accident victim.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
